Title: Great sciatic nerve
Description: An image showing the sciatic nerve in position at the top of the thigh. The surrounding muscles and tissues are also shown and are cut away to different levels. The sciatic nerve is the largest in the human body, and runs from the lower back through the buttock and the back of the thigh. The volume this image is taken from deals with the amputation of the thigh at the hip joint, and specifically the case of Elizabeth Powis. The image is intended to show the appearance and location of the sciatic nerve, and no other part of the image is labelled. The text gives a brief anatomical description of the sciatic nerve and the arteries and muscles around the hip joint. The volume also contains arguments for and against this type of operation, previous cases, instructions for carrying out the surgery, and a detailed account of the case of Elizabeth Powis, her treatment and recovery.
